Today is not a day of "service" or a "holiday" in the sense that we Americans usually call holidays. Today is a day that we remember that, even in the face of witnessing the worst that humans can do to each other, the best can come out out of us as well.
Never forget the victims, but never forget the perpetrators. And don't let anyone sugar coat or try to rationalize what happened nine years ago today, lest we dishonor the innocent life that was lost, or somehow excuse the monsters who committed this act of murder in the name of Allah, Muhammed and Islam, the Religion of Peace.
